    All Hands On Deck (AHOD) is a volunteering project that will engage two young European volunteers from Italy and Portugal for roughly 3 months in the archipelago in the South-West of Finland. But not only your hands will be working! The expression all hands on deck means that all available people need to come to help, especially in an emergency. The archipelago is being depopulated and we need extra hands to keep it vibrant and keep fun, useful and inclusive traditions alive. AHOD aims to make people on the islands Vänö and Hitis meet over handicrafts or activities on their respective
    island. We also want to take nature into consideration and do hands-on activities such as landscaping and maintaining wooden houses. With AHOD we will make the communities on the islands tighter, help the associations with their priceless work, spread knowledge about handicrafts, provide two young Europeans with work experience and more
    handicraft skills and we will keep nature healthy and tidy.
    The project All Hands On Deck consists of one volunteering activity for two individuals for 100 days including travels. The start date is roughly May 17th and the end date August 24th 2020. The participants will be young persons, aged between 18 and 29, from Italy and Portugal.

    Tasks

    Learning and teaching handicraft skills, landscaping, helping to arrange social events on the islands Hitis and Vänö in the archipelago in the South-West of Finland. The majority language spoken on the islands is Swedish, but the working language is mostly English and body language.

    About the organisation

    Vänö Vänner has worked with international volunteering projects every Summer since 2011, mostly through European Voluntary Service EVS and European Solidarity Corps ESC. More than 15 young European volunteers have been working in the association through the years. Their tasks have varied from helping with association activities to maintaining the nature path.

    The association is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and is based on the small island of Vänö. One of its main aims is to create a platform for cooperation between year-a-round inhabitants and holidaymakers on the island in a sustainable environment.
    Vänö Vänner also wishes to support the economical and cultural growth of the island. The association arranges Summer events and activities and is involved in different national and international networks with other island associations.

    Volunteer Profile

    The volunteers will be young persons, aged between 18 and 29, from Italy and Portugal. The volunteers should be open to the experience in a rural and remote area with few inhabitants. They should know that the project will take place in the archipelago and that the placement is on islands, which means that you will be isolated.
    Bus connections are very few and ferries don't even run every day, it takes around 3 hours to get to the nearest big city, Turku. But even if the volunteering activity is held in a rural area, the volunteers do not need to be from a rural area, however, if they are, the HO:s are able to provide support and have an understanding of the geographical and logistical challenges.
    They should be able to work through the obstacles of being isolated (for instance not having several shops or gyms to go to) and not give up at the first problem. The young people moving away and loosing contact to their home municipality is a problem in the archipelago and we hope that introducing ESC to the youngsters in the area will help them in seeing the possibilities in their home. We will co-operate with the school in Hitis and maybe also in Dalsbruk to spread awareness
    and motivation. Some inspiration will also be spread via social media (maybe not directly reaching youth, but young adults/adults) under #escarchipelago and #allhandsondeck.
    The activities are very versatile and the most important quality for the job is patience. Things usually work out when you give them time. The main goals are to give the volunteers a chance to get to know the environment, handicrafts, associations and social circumstances on our islands (helping to plan and set up knitting circles, landscaping such as sustain nature-paths, doing organic gardening and organizing activities for locals etc.).
    The theme of AHOD is handicrafts ans hand-on activities, so the volunteers need to at least be interested in the topic.
    They don't need previous experience, but it can be an advantage, since the cultural exchange is bigger in this topic in that case. The volunteers will also do some social media work but are not required to have certain digital skills before the project, since they can get guidance from their mentors in this task.

      Selection Process

      The volunteers will be chosen on the base of a volunteering application, including their self-evaluation, if they believe they are ready for it, are interested in work with people of different ages, handicrafts, NGOs, landscaping, building maintenance and can accept the restrictions, then we trust that the young persons will be suitable for the position. The supporting and applying organisations will pick their favorites out of the applications for volunteering and then discuss on a Skype-meeting/via WhatsApp which out of these volunteers are the most suitable for the project.
