Altai Blue Horizon Summer Programme

The Altai Blue Horizon Summer Programme is a month-long initiative that provides free and inclusive educational opportunities to 240 children aged 10 to 16 in Bayan-Ulgii, Mongolia. The programme runs from 9th June to 9th July 2025 and aims to bridge educational gaps, offer enriching experiences, and create a safe and engaging environment for young learners during the long summer break.

The programme takes place at four partner schools, including two public schools in the provincial town of Ulgii and two in nearby villages. It brings together a diverse team of local teachers, international volunteers, NGO staff, and student assistants. This collaboration ensures that all children, regardless of their socio-economic background, have access to quality education and meaningful activities throughout the summer.

Educational and Recreational Activities
The Summer Programme offers a variety of educational and recreational activities that focus on both academic growth and personal development. Key activities include:

  • English and Mongolian Classes: Students are grouped by proficiency and participate in interactive lessons that build practical communication skills.
  • Arts and Crafts Workshops: Children explore their creativity through hands-on projects and learn about cultural and traditional practices.
  • Sports and Physical Activities: Organised sports and games support physical fitness, teamwork, and enjoyment.

 

Collaboration and Community Involvement
The programme goes beyond education by promoting community spirit and cultural exchange. Parents, schools, and local authorities take part in both planning and execution, ensuring the programme meets local needs and reflects community values. Tasks

During the Altai Blue Horizon Summer Programme, volunteers play an essential role in providing an educational experience for 240 children in Bayan-Ulgii over the course of one month. They stay at one of the four partner schools and are involved in both planning and delivering activities.

Key Volunteer Tasks:

- Teach Language Classes: Lead English or Mongolian lessons with local teachers and help students improve their language skills through practical exercises.
- Run Arts and Crafts Workshops: Organise creative activities where children can explore new skills and learn about cultural traditions.
- Set Up Sports Activities: Plan sports sessions that encourage physical fitness, teamwork, and a sense of fun.
- Work with the Team: Coordinate with local teachers, NGO staff, and other volunteers to develop lesson plans and organise daily activities.

Throughout the programme, volunteers connect with the culture of Western Mongolia and make a real difference in the lives of young participants, offering support and guidance in a welcoming environment.

Volunteer Profile

FOR FOREIGN VOLUNTEERS

- Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
- Language Proficiency: A C1 level in English (no official certificate required). Knowledge of Kazakh or Mongolian is a bonus to enhance your experience.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Approach local traditions, languages, and customs with respect and open-mindedness.
- Adaptability to Rural Living: Be comfortable with remote living conditions, which may include limited access to internet, hot water, or modern conveniences.

FOR MONGOLIAN VOLUNTEERS

- Minimum Age: 18 years old (or 15 years old with parental consent).
- Language Proficiency: Native-level Mongolian is required. English fluency is highly welcome but not mandatory.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Foster inclusivity and understanding toward national minorities and ethnic groups in the region.
- Adaptability to Rural Living: Be comfortable with remote living conditions, which may include limited access to internet, hot water, or modern conveniences.

FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS

- Time Commitment: Volunteers must commit to the full length of the chosen programme, typically four weeks for the Summer Programme or at least a semester for the Teacher Exchange Programme.
- Health & Resilience: Volunteers should be in good physical and mental health, as volunteering in rural Mongolia can be demanding.
- Experience: Prior teaching, volunteering, or youth association experience is a plus but not mandatory.
- Criminal Background Check: Required for volunteers working closely with children or vulnerable groups.
- Health Insurance: All volunteers must have valid health and travel insurance for the duration of their stay.
