Erasmus+ Traineeships Abroad: A Unique Opportunity for European Students

The Erasmus+ programme offers students the chance to complete traineeships, work placements, and internships abroad, within virtually any type of workplace. This is a valuable opportunity to gain international professional experience, develop key soft skills, and enrich one’s academic journey.

The programme is open to students enrolled in higher education institutions in Programme Countries at all levels: short-cycle, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral studies. Recent graduates may also participate, provided they apply while still enrolled.

Why Choose an Erasmus+ Traineeship?

A traineeship abroad allows students to:

  • develop entrepreneurial and creative skill
  • improve foreign language proficiency;
  • strengthen interpersonal and intercultural teamwork abilities;
  • gain a deeper understanding of another country and culture.

These experiences enhance employability, broaden perspectives, and add significant value to any CV.

Duration and Mobility Options

Erasmus+ traineeships can be funded for 2 to 12 months. Students may also:

  • combine the traineeship with a study period abroad, integrating academic and professional mobility;
  • choose blended mobility, which combines a short physical stay abroad (between 5 and 30 days) with a virtual work component.

This flexibility makes it easier to tailor the experience to individual academic and personal needs.

Eligibility and Conditions

To be eligible, the traineeship must:

  • be relevant to the student’s field of study and learning objectives;
  • take place in an organisation or company located in a Programme Country;
  • be arranged through a higher education institution holding the Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through the international or Erasmus+ office of the student’s higher education institution, which provides detailed information on calls, deadlines, and procedures. Students can also search for opportunities using the Erasmus Intern Traineeship Portal, developed by the Erasmus Student Network, which lists traineeship offers from companies and organisations across Europe.

For additional information and assistance, students can contact the National Agency in their country, which offers guidance on Erasmus+ mobility opportunities.
