ZeroWaste PIX | Photo competition on Environmental Protection

Introduction

Are you over 18 and passionate about photography? Do you want to send a positive message about environmental protection and show the world the problems of the country where you live thought your photo?

If the answer is yes, you should participate in “ZeroWaste PIX 2023“, a photo competition organised by the European Environment Agency (EEA).

The competition

Every year the European Environment Agency organises a photo competition to raise awareness on an environmental theme and invites young people from all over Europe to share their views on it.

ZeroWaste PIX” is a photo competition to reflect on the state of modern human civilisation. The aim of the project is to raise awareness and inspire positive changes in environmental protection.

The competition will remain open between 3 July 2023 and 3 October 2023.

The categories

Participants can submit photographs regarding the following four categories:

  • Circular and smart:

Participants will be showing through the photos various suppliers that are contributing to alleviating environmental pressures through their production lines. Some examples are photos of green innovations making use of leftovers and waste or the use of residual flows from the food industry to produce animal feed.

  • Eco-lifestyles:

This categorie includes photos that capture the habits that help minimise the daily generation of waste, such as reducing meat consumption, composting organic waste, embracing the second-hand market, buying local and organic products or producing your own electricity

  • Wasteful production:

The photos in this categories should show how EU industries contribute to this wasteful production. Examples are photographies of inefficient production lines, disposal of toxic materials, or wastewater discharges.

  • Consumption mania:

The aim of this categories is to show the current consumption patterns and throwaway culture through pictures of, for example, large volume of waste, dumpsters full of unsold products or animals interacting with the discarded leftovers of human civilisation.

The selection process

There will be 30-50 finalists and 6 winners.

The selection process will be as follows:

  • The best photographs in each category will be selected by a pre-selection committee.
  • Finalist photos will then be submitted to an external jury that will determine the winners of all prizes except for the Public Choice Award.
  • For the Public Choice Award, the finalist entries put forward by the pre-selection committee will be open to a public vote from 24 October to 7 November 2023.
