On February 7, 2023, Vice-President Vera Jourova and young journalists will join an online event to discuss about the role of independent journalism and media in the EU.
The goal of the debate is simple yet crucial in today’s society: to highlight the importance of independent journalism and media in building democratic societies.

Nowadays, the media industry is facing several issues, including the economic difficulties and disinformation campaigns. Moreover, the war in Ukraine has highlighted the importance of journalists’ and media’s roles. Chances to talk to the main actors are not many, that’s why the event on 7 February is an important opportunity to gain awareness of the state of journalism in the current European panorama.
The topics to be covered during the online event are numerous:
– Why is media freedom and plurality so important?
– The EU’s action to protect independent media and journalists’ safety;
– As a response to disinformation, a strong, independent media;
– Traditional media in transition to digital;
Furthermore, the Commission is committed to maintaining a free, independent, and pluralistic media sector, will outline political and legislative steps taken to protect independent media and ensure working conditions for journalists in the EU.
